None of us know what’s the pattern. I had to replace the db9 connector on my unit due to poor connection. Our in-vehicle testing was also positive; the Earthmate’s signal retention and tracking accuracy were spot on. Right now, I’d recommend using a Magellan only if you have one already. I’m not sure if the Magellan GPS receiver just lost the satellite signals more easily than the Garmin, or if both lost satellites but the Garmin recovered more quickly, or if the Garmin was just dead reckoning — extrapolating from the last reliable reading — as Garmins do. It has some appealing features.

I have a new Lenovo R running Win7 Pro 64 bit.
I wish to use an old Earthmate Model V 1. Earthmate DB9 pin assignment by wire color. Street Atlas supports voice-guided driving directions; contains more than 4 million points of interest POIsuch as ATMs, restaurants, gas stations, eartymate major attractions; and allows route creation on the fly.
My GPS Receiver Recommendations
Although not nearly as slick looking as the Pharos or TeleType receivers, the Earthmate can be worn on a belt or clipped onto your vehicle’s sun visor, both of which afford a clear view of the sky. Right now, I’d recommend using a Magellan only if you have one already. Twist the black wire and the ground cable together and solder them to the negative post as shown Left. I’ve confirmed that these drivers allow the Earthmate to operate with Tru-Traffic, but starting with version 6. They prefer the Magellan over the Trimble.
I’ve been quite happy with DeLorme’s Blue Logger, since the wireless setup is so simple. You should do this buy the optional serial cable if it’s not included for maximum flexibility in working with Tru-Traffic, as downloading pre-recorded trip logs directly to Tru-Traffic requires connecting the GPS receiver via its serial cable.
These adaptors come with software drivers for serial port emulation. This worked well and had the additional advantage that it gave an update every second, as opposed to every 2 seconds as all the NMEA GPS receiver I’ve tried. I tested this with a Garmin eTrex Legend, each connected to a different laptop simultaneously running Tru-Traffic and both sitting side by side on my dash board.
This mode is a bit version of Win XP running as a virtual package under Win 7 bit. One user reports successfully using DeLorme Serial Emulator for this purpose. At the time of this writing, there’s a bug in their NMEA compliance, and ver.
GPX file for subsequent importing into Tru-Traffic. I give them a qualified recommendation.
Tru-Traffic prefers this sentence because it includes the date as well as the speed and heading. Disadvantages are that it could work only when connected to a computer, not as a standalone unit, and its battery life was very short, making the power cable connector a virtual necessity. Some of them work fine as GPS data loggers, and some work also connected through Franson’s GpsGate directly to Tru-Traffic for monitoring “here” and “now” in your arterial timings diagrams, but some of the recent models are unsuitable for either purpose, and I can no longer keep track of which ones serve us well and which ones don’t.
I do have a spare XP laptop with the Delorme map that I use occasionally, so I’ll place the Earthmate in it’s bag. If you get a USB-only Garmin GPS receiver, or you don’t have the serial cable, then at present you must use some additional software to either connect the GPS receiver to Tru-Traffic or to download the pre-recorded trip logs to a file for importing into Tru-Traffic.

I’m not sure if the Magellan GPS receiver just lost the satellite signals more easily than the Garmin, or if both lost satellites but the Garmin recovered more quickly, or uxb the Garmin was just dead reckoning — extrapolating from the last reliable reading — as Garmins do.
I have used this configuration with a Sony Laptop and have had no problems of any kind. I found that it fairly frequently stopped reporting a current, tracked, position for long intervals — 10 seconds or more. I am also running the Win XP mode under Win 7.
While recording trip logs, Eaethmate doesn’t like these long gaps. This new one does work as a standalone unit and is supposed to have a longer battery life.
Their impression is that the Trimble insists on a high degree of accuracy, and when it can’t deliver that accuracy, it’s silent. The GPS receiver itself weighs only 2 ounces and can connect to non-Bluetooth systems via a USB cable includedbut for wireless connectivity, you must insert it into the bundled PowerPack.
The LT was nice because it was small, got its power from the port, was more durable, and got a very rapid fix compared to the others. They are inexpensive and there is ussb special about the LT The Bad Bulky; could use a style makeover.
