Note that network attached devices are not queried unless configured in this file. It’a an universal program who access scanner directly at hardware level, it doesn’t require any driver.
Brother updated software December 25, 2017.
I have a Canon printer, MX I will attach sys log files. The old problem may be that the config file doesn’t know where to find the scanner. If you can ping the ip brofher of your printer Try asking the OEM for assistance and see what they say.
I have the same scanenr. The only difficulty is due to SELinux for the printer. Each files covers different Brother scanner models. What’s your output of sane-find-scanner?

Mac OS X not see a Fedora shared printer. You can follow Brother install process on their website if you wish.
Note that there are still some old Brother Websites which can be a bit misleading.
